New Instruments = New Music
Percussionist Kjell Tore Innervik has invented several instruments for this recording, investigating with curiosity what constitutes an instrument. As he ventures into new landscapes of sound, performance and composition take on new dimensions.
“To me, music is a living medium in a state of constant change, searching for answers to fundamental questions. What am I trying to communicate? For whom am I playing? In which medium am I working, and what is my role as an artist in the creation and interpretation of music? This recording is in many ways a manifestation of reflections on these questions.”

The NIME instruments
New Interface for Musical Expression is an international conference dedicated to scientific research on the development of new technologies for musical expression and artistic performance. Researchers and musicians from all over the world gather to share their knowledge and latest work on new musical interface design. Innervik says “The instruments I play are a result of my investigations concerning what can be defined as a musical instrument, and how one can make music out of apparently inanimate objects – expanding what already exists and creating something new. I want to break boundaries for myself, and not least for the audience.”

Interpretation and creation
Together with co-producer and engineer Mats Claesson, Innervik has interpreted nine different scores written especially for him and the new instruments. The composers have left their pieces in the hands of Innervik and Claesson, not only to be performed on a stage, but also for the creative process to be continued into the recording and mixing studio.

Art film
Both the performance and the instruments on this recording provide a visual aspect that is an important element of the experience. We therefore invited video and performance artist Lavasir Nordrum to interpret the project through his visual expression. The result is a 20-minute film, an audio-visual journey into Kjell Tore Innervik’s artistic project.
