An urgent new work by New York based Pulitzer Prize winner and Chinese composer Du Yun investigates the plight of refugees, in myth, history and the violent present.

Where We Lost Our Shadows is a powerful and timely new work for orchestra, including disturbing film sequences of a Syrian family crossing the Aegean Sea, shot by Khaled Jarrar, a Palestinian visual artist based in Ramallah. His footage shows just the most recent example of human migration that Yun’s composition explores, as well as expanding into a vision of human movement as a perpetual factor in world history.

Du Yun’s emotive music itself follows the migration of a musical language – devotional qawwali music that travelled from medieval Muslim India to Central Asia, Bengal, and South Asia – and incorporates text by the Palestinian poet Ghassan Zaqtan.

Together with Oslo Sinfonietta, Sofia Jernberg (Norwegian jazz/experimental singer), Ali Sethi (Pakistani vocal star) and New York percussionst Shayna Dunkelman perform this urgent and important musical testament that shifts between political reality and allegorical representations of global exodus.

An opera about climate change and natural disasters

Experience a spectacular Norway premiere! The church opera Upon This Handful of Earth deals with one of today's absolute greatest challenges: climate change and natural disasters. The opera tells stories of human lives that have been impacted by environmental disasters. Nearly 100 musicians contribute during the Norwegian premiere and fill the church with sound and visual impressions in a full-scale opera production.

 

The 2019 Church music festival's major initiative, Upon This Handful of Earth, is composed by Gisle Kverndokk. The libretto is written by Aksel-Otto Bull and Kverndokk, inspired by texts by the Catholic priest, philosopher and naturalist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The work also makes use of a 3500-year-old Veda text in Sanskrit, texts from American indigenous peoples and environment-related newspaper articles concerning the Chernobyl accident, Shell's oil disaster in Nigeria and the fracking industry. The opera is written for boys' and girls' choir, mixed choir, chamber orchestra and six vocal soloists, with a central role performed by the boy soprano Philip Weiss-Hagen, all under the direction of Vivianne Sydnes.

Veldig hyggelig å bli nominert for innspillingen av Psappha og The King of Denmark på Utopias!

Takk til Morten Lindberg og 2L for strålende samarbeid med å få de kunstneriske ideene inn i dette formatet og for å få utforske de mulighetene som det representerer! 

Jeg vil også takke mine gode kolleger Ivar Frounberg, Ståle Stenslie og Maziar Raein, som har jobbet tett med meg i prosessen med å utforske musikken. De lange diskusjonene, eksperimentene, drøftingene om de små og store tingene. Og de mange rundene med stadig endringer...

Vi brukte 3 år på å jobbe inn og omkring i disse stykkene. Rundt 1000 arbeidstimer har jeg brukt på hvert stykke i løpet av perioden. Det er den tiden det tar å gjøre musikk fra partitur, til mitt eget. 

Platen er en del av FoU-arbeidet på Norges musikkhøgskole gjennom Nordheim senteret, som nå ledes av Darla Crispin. Takk også til Birgitte Pollen for fantastisk forståelse og hjelp. Prosjektet er støttet av NMH og Prosjektprogrammet for Kunstnerisk Utviklingsarbeid.

Franz Schubert, sagt Eivind Buene, war ein „Singer/Songwriter“. Eine Schubertiade als Vorbild, stellte sich der Komponist – selbst mit Popmusik aufgewachsen – Schubert in der Singer/Songwriter-Pose der 70er Jahre vor: mit einem Fender Rhodes und der Stimme eines Popsängers. So inszenierte er seine ersten Schubert Lounges für seine Freunde in Oslo. Angeregt von einem dieser Hauskonzerte schlug der Bariton Halvor Mellen Buene vor, dass beide einmal als Sänger zusammenarbeiten könnten. Eivind Buene interessiert diese Reibung unterschiedlicher Ästhetiken und unterschiedlicher Denksysteme. In der weiterentwickelten Schubert Lounge treffen gleich drei verschiedene Musikrichtungen aufeinander: Buenes eigene rekontextualisierte Version von Schubert-Liedern, Halvor Mellens Interpretation von Buenes für seine Stimme komponierte Musik, basierend auf Fragmenten aus Schuberts Tagebuch, und Tora Augestads sehr persönliche Interpretation von Schubert-Liedern. Die Musiker der Oslo Sinfonietta bewegen sich zwischen den Welten der Singer/Songwriter und der zeitgenössischen Musik. Seit seinem Komponisten-Debüt vor 20 Jahren ist das Ensemble ein wichtiger Interpret von Eivind Buenes Musik. Nun werden sie das erste Mal gemeinsam auftreten.
